Kyoshi John Therien

A tireless individual and always ready to help make his community a better place, John Therien is a well-known and highly respected teacher of Martial Arts. In demand across North America, Europe and other parts of the globe, John is a highly skilled instructor providing seminars, and motivational speeches. He is also chief instructor at the Therien Jiu-Jitsu & Kickboxing School, headquartered in Vanier. He has been in business for over 40 years and during this time has won many awards including Golden Belt Award for being a pioneer of Jiu-Jitsu in Canada and a Canadian Government Award for achievement in Jiu-Jitsu. In May of 2010, “Hanshi” hosted a World Kobudo Convention and Competition with more than 10,000 participants worldwide. John has been Chair of the QV BIA since 2007. In these three years, he has led an exceptional team of directors and has helped elevate the commercial zone to a better place to work and live.
Serge Faucher

Serge Faucher graduated from Collège Boréal in Sudbury, ON in 1996. He is the Regional Manager of Dignity Memorial Racine, Robert & Gauthier, responsible for the area that encompasses the cities of Ottawa/Gatineau and Cornwall. Serge created the Quartier Vanier’s Security Patrol Program along with the Safety and Physical Environment Committee, that works hand in hand with Ottawa Police Services, the City of Ottawa departments, OC Transpo, the Wabano Centre and the residents committee. Serge has received the President’s Recognition Award and the Outstanding Commitment for his work in the QV. In his spare time, Serge likes to coach minor hockey in Vanier and has done so for more than 10 years.
Councillor Mathieu Fleury

Mathieu Fleury was born and raised in Ottawa. He attended Francojeunesse Elementary Public School and Franco-Cité Catholic High School before graduating at the University of Ottawa where he received both his MHK concentration in Sports Management and BSc specialization in Human Kinetics.
Mathieu has a diverse background in physical activity and health. For the past 10 years, he worked for the City of Ottawa in Recreation and Culture serving the public as a lifeguard supervisor, advanced swimming instructor, and as well as camp and aquatic program coordinator. Besides front-line experience at the local level, he was an intern for the Minister of State (Sport) where he was involved in both sports policy and Canada’s position in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games project. Growing up and having been involved with Sandy Hill Minor Hockey Association, le Patro d’Ottawa, and other local community centres along with working for Tim Horton Children’s Foundation Camp, one of his passions includes working with youth and children. He also volunteered for a variety of national sports organizations including the Canadian Olympic Committee, Canada Women’s National Baseball Team, Volleyball Canada and Diving Canada. Overall, his commitment in life is to lead by example and help others to embark on healthier and more active lives in our community.
Mathieu is an avid cyclist, runner, snowboarder, and cross-country skier.
Marwan El Rassi

Marwan El Rassi has been the owner of Rassi Coiffure for fifteen years. His education focused on psychology and theology. He did volunteer work for UNICEF in Lebanon for seven years, helping kids to be kids and to see the world as a place for all of us, regardless of race, creed or colour. Marwan’s work with women’s shelters and young single mothers was inspired by his philosophy that one can help empower women by making them feel good about themselves. He worked as an international educator helping people to achieve their goals and dreams in the beauty industry.
Bill Dicks

Bill Dicks was born in London, Ontario and raised in Ottawa. He attended Trent University where he graduated in 1990 with a BSc in Geography and Environmental Science. While at Trent University, Bill was the President of the Trent University Geographical Society and won the Trent University Athletic Award in 1990.
For the past 20 years, Bill has worked as a System Engineer in the military and aerospace industry. He is co-owner of the restaurant Bobby’s Table at 255 Montréal Road with partner Bobby Leblanc.
The restaurant celebrated its first anniversary on June 1st, 2011. As a community leader, Bill Dicks contributes to the improvement of our commercial zone and is a member of the QV BIA Marketing Committee.
Marc-André Way

Marc-André Way graduated from the University of Ottawa with a Business degree, majoring in Marketing, Management & Finance in 1991. He is currently the Chief Operating Officer of Capital Taxi and Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice-President of Coventry Connections. He started his career twenty years ago with Capital Taxi, the second largest fleet of vehicles in Ottawa. Capital also operates a successful limousine and executive sedan business, a real estate division and a finance company which Mr. Way manages on a day to day basis. Mr. Way is an active member of the Ottawa Tourism Association, Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and Taxicab, Limousine and Para Transit Association and holds a seat on the Transportation Committee of the Greater Ottawa Chamber of Commerce and the Taxi Advisory Committee with the City of Ottawa. Capital Taxi is the QV Outdoor Farmers Market Major Sponsor providing a wonderful venue for our local farmers and performers every year. Residents of the area support this local market with great pride and enthusiasm.
Mark Kaluski

Mark Kaluski was born and raised in Ottawa. He worked for the Federal government for over 10 years, most recently at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in strategic planning. Mr. Kaluski left the public sector to co-found HashMark Holdings Ltd. – a private equity firm. HashMark Holdings owns and manages 4 businesses including Monson Deluxe Cleaners - a Vanier mainstay for over 20 years located on Beechwood Avenue. Mr. Kaluski has an MBA from Queen’s University and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). He created the QV BIA’s Economic Development Committee in 2010 that oversees the very successful Quartier Outdoor Market at the corner of Hannah and Montréal. The Farmers Market is now in its 3rd year. It also features an annual Artsfest highlighting some of the area’s finest Chefs and performers.
